Review: GodMode -The Chaos Order
“Whatever happened to the alley way street cyphers, them good old days when all we’d play is Street Fighter, back in the days when you could smell it in the air, the golden days where rappers spat hell over the snare” -Whatever Happened by GodMode.
Three tracks into the Chaos Order and I’m hooked on this guy for life.
The intro plays: “Some men aren’t looking for anything logical like money, they can’t be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with….Some men, just want to watch the world burn.”
For those who didn’t know, and I didn’t, prior to the review (slaps self on the hand),
GodMode, used to be known as BasicOne and is an Underground Hip Hop MC from Christchurch. He is one fourth of the Debt Collectors (South Auckland, Hawkes Bay, Christchurch) and apart of NZ’s largest hardcore rap coalition, Silverback Gang.
The Chaos Order is a 19 track masterpiece of political, intelligent and sophisticated rhymes that come together as more than just songs; instead a cohesive album that would or should make ‘rappers’ hibernate into their bat caves and make sure their own work is at such a level.
Nineteen tracks is a long time to hold anyone’s attention these days, but it’s also what I found good about it; taking me back to a time where an artist commanded your respect without telling you to give it-the quality of their work simply took it.
Productions credits for the album lie predominantly with DJ Trickalome, but also DJ Kase, Flows, 44 and Hitz. Chaos Order is put together in a manor that left me feeling like these are artists I could trust to teach me something worth knowing.
There are no adolescent ideas here. Content wise, it is an album to separate men from boys.
Samples from movies, the news and other sound bites are one of my favorite features.
Notable is his honesty about real life issues, which could be said, is fucking important in a modern day where successful men (cough, cough, hip-pop music) don’t have to openly commit to anything in life they don’t feel like- it was extremely refreshing to experience.
It’s unsurprising to note Godmode was among the bill of artists who opened for KRS One’s Auckland show recently; along with other New Zealand heavy weights, Che Fu, DLT, King Kapisi and DJ Sir-Vere to name a few; and an understatement to say The Chaos Order, which came out late November 2011, is a testament to something KRS One said:
“Rap is something we do; Hip Hop is something we live”.
